Who doesn't love a middle-of-the-night-run to the ER??

Yes, well David awoke at 1:30 last night barking like a seal...croup. He was really having labored breathing though. We had him in the bathroom with steam, and that wasn't helping. He was shaking terribly, so I called 911. He was taken to Doylestown Hospital, and they gave him a nebulizer treatment, which calmed things down, then they gave him a steroid, which they said would have a long-term effect. His temp was 103.4, so they immediately sent him for chest xray to rule out pneumonia, because croup doesn't usually have a high-spiking fever like that. But, everything came back okay, just showed narrow passage ways, which is croup. He did so good with everything, he never cried once, he did everything that was asked of him, I was amazed. He started acting like himself again once the fever came back down, even gave us a superbark like Bolt! Then they wheeled over a cart with a TV on it with every Disney movie you could possibly imagine. Well, he was in his glory...he even asked if he could sleep there. So after a few hours of observation, he was okay to go home, just have to make a followup with his Ped. on Monday. Most of all, I was just glad that he was okay and extremely pleased with the nursing staff, the Dr., the admins-everyone was so nice and accomodating. Very on time there as well, no sitting and waiting for hours and hours for an xray to come back. So do you think after going to bed at 4:30 in the morning that he would sleep in? No, not my David, he wakes up like clockwork...7:20 on the nose. That's okay though, I can handle that!

  3. Croup is the worst (until the first vomitting, woozey, concussion but hopefully that won't happen for a LONG time). Of all our ER visits, I remember Jason's first croup visit the most and running from hospital to hospital looking for someone to treat him all the while Uncle Jerry was in the hospital too. . . Those first born Villante boys must be extra sensitive to their family.
Hang in there! Keep a record of his behavior in his babybook too - I've found that I am often curious about how Jason reacted to the steriods for the croup vs how Carly behaved with them for her sinus problems. I also found that with each attack I am wondering how long the first one lasted, how many days until fully recovered, how many sleepless nights, etc.
Just when I would think he would be healed, BAM, he'd be up all night again - I always wished I would have written the course of the virus down -he had it 3 seperate times bad enough for the ER and 3-4 times after that :( It seems to be his virus of choice.
We are sending a package off for the boys today too (Jay took it to work with him). The new things have tags - then we included some puppets ours outgrew, but I didn't launder them though - just pulled them out of storage. They may need some spot cleaning.
Hope tonight goes well with David and that the worst of it is behind you guys!

  4. Croup is VERY scary. I remember when Jason had it(as a baby and as an adolescent :) ) Yeah, what is it with kids going into the hospital when something else very serious is going on?? It happened when my Dad was in the hospital the last time and then David was admitted with gastroenteritis and dehydration. It's like we like to bunk together or something. I was amazed at how fast the meds worked for him. It was night and day. He was a little perky after the swig of steroid, but not like hyper. I thought for sure he wouldn't fall asleep when we got home, but he did. Now, this morning is a different story. He's bouncing off the walls, can't sit still, hungry constantly. He was very pale this morning, but acting fine, so I don't knnow if that has something to do with the steroid or what. But barely any cough, a little runny nose, no fever! I hope we don't run into any problems tonight. If so, it's round two!

  5. The steroids do wonders. Even after breathing treatments and steroids, the bad parts always lasted up to 4 nights with 2 being BAD. Then the "cold" symptoms and a cough lingered. I remember sleeping on the couch with him on my chest or Jay's if he didn't have to work. I was always worried that if I wasn't right with him something would go wrong. (I probably created the sleepless nights myself by doing that)
I think that "Patience is a Virtue" must have been originally meant for parents of a sick child. It gives it a whole new meaning when I'm dealing with a sick one rather than an unruley one.
